During FEBRUARY the Butterfly Foundation is encouraging the public to spread the message of Fat Talk Free February by engaging with family and friends either at school or at work, asking them to End Fat Talk!
Fat Talk describes all the conversations that reinforce unrealistic beauty ideals and contribute to women and men’s dissatisfaction with their bodies. “Do I look fat in this?” “I hate my arms!” and “I wish I had a flat stomach.” These are all examples of fat talk. They may seem harmless but they are powerful statements that reinforce negative body image and left unchallenged, can have a damaging impact on a person’s quality of life.
Research shows that a mere 3-5 minutes of listening to or engaging in fat talk can lead some women to feel bad about their appearance and experience heightened levels of body dissatisfaction. During February we would love you to help us CHANGE THE CONVERSATION. and create a more positive body image for men, women and children everywhere.
So for the month of February, we want your support to encourage more Fat Talk Free conversation,to support one another to recognise how amazing we are, and that we are all deserving of healthy lifestyles and respectful relationships. It’s a time to celebrate, have fun and challenge the norm of fat talk to create a more positive environment to work, live and play. The first step of getting involved would be to sign our Fat Talk Free Pledge!
Make a commitment to shut down fat talk, both for yourself and for your friends. When you hear someone compare their body to someone else’s, or speak negatively about their body, you can choose not to respond in kind, and tell them about the negative impact their words are having. It’s not only for you and your friends, but if we all make a decision to be aware and make a change then we can have an amazing impact on the community.
